Cloning passport card RFIDs in bulk for under $250

Let me explain a little bit about RFID system we’re looking here. Chris used Motorolla XR400 RFID with ISO-18000-6C or ppl usually call it Gen 2 and it operates at US frequency 902~928MHz. AFAIK *MAXIMUM* reading distance of Gen 2 readers in the market is around 15 meters or around 49 feet in ideal condition means unobstructed and without presence of RF inhibitant materials such as metal or water (eg: human body). I’d say chances of anyone reading your passport number is *SLIM*. WHY??.

The XR400 reads 900 MHz tags. It will not see 13 MHz tags, which are used in ICAO-compliant passports, even if it is very close to them. The coupling mechanism is different and the protocols are completely incompatible. The real problem with passports is short-range skimming not long-distance reading. See e.g. Finkenzeller’s RFID Handbook (or my book, The RF in RFID) for details.

But the number generated by the Passport Card isn’t personally identifiable information, its not like a social security number.

I think that would be more dangeorus if you could to write the Tag RFID with another information.. but if the tag is read only the problem with the passports RFID tag can be solved using tags with short range..

First of all this video shows NO evidence that he picked up any Passport tags. At the very start he only had 3 so called ID’s, he never showed detecting any ID’s!! Even if he did pick up a couple of RFID Tags, he now has to make a fake Passport then hack into the US Passport Office and find out who the ID belonged too then make a Cloned Tag. Sorry but that is NOT very easy. Can it be done, Maybe. But this video gives NO proof that he cloned any Passport. He is a bunch of hot air.

He isn’t claiming to clone a passport. What he is showing is that anyone carrying one of these IDs can easily have the tag read and is, therefore, trackable. Maybe you don’t think that is a problem but many of us do.

This is just a perfect case of the privacy “spinmeisters” trying to get the public overly excited about RFID. I look at license plates all day, and unless I have the database that provides me with information…they are just numbers. You people need to get a life!

Beware of the RFID apologists who tell you that it poses no risks to security or privacy. The risks about RFID were well documented in a study by RSA Labs entitled “RFID Tags in Security Applications.” Also, Chris Paget’s company (IOActive) was sent a cease and desist letter by HID Global Corp. claiming infringement of intellectual property just before he was to present similar information at the Black Hat convention in February of 2007.

All he has are numbers. The numbers have to be checked against a database. There is no personal information on the chips! Look at the readings he pulled, can you get any info from that. If he’s tracking anything it’s only a number! Whats he going to do when he tries to cross a boarder with his “Cloned” card? Show them his antenna???

So everyone in the U.S. without a U.S. passport card is committing a felony? No, he is a british national with a british passport probably. He is not eligible for a U.S. passport card because he is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, but his boss is.

How many times could a high zoom digital camera be used to take pictures of photo IDs when people are waiting in line at the ticket counter? Are there airports that have balconies overlooking the ticket counter where every drivers license could be photographed?The possibilities for abuse are nearly endless.Bad as the criminal abuse potential is, I’m not as worried about black hat hackers. I’m more worried about my government.
