Great product though a bit pricey for an x1 PCI-e vs x16, July 8, 2011

Product is easy to install and use. The VGA and DVI ports work great. Did not use the the HDMI port yet. Compared to an x16 PCI Express video card, these x1 types are a bit more expensive.

The only PCI Express x1 video card that would not somehow block my other PCI slots that I require for other expansion cards. I saw others, but was somewhat skeptical or they were sold out. I shopped/looked elsewhere too. Prices was fairly competative. Amazon had free shipping and the very very few times I ever needed their customer service, they were pleasant and responsive.

I used/tested this HIS ATI Radeon HD5450 in three different Dell PC’s that I had upgraded to Windows 7. Windows 7 no longer supported the onboard Intel Chipsets that were on the Dell Dimension 4700 and 3100/E310 models. The Windows 7 benchmarks rated this video card between 4.8 to 5.2 depending on my system’s hardware and operating system configurations. My two Dimension 3100/E310 PC’s run ESRI ArcGIS and I use the other for video/multimedia playback respectively. Works pretty well and plays 720p video very well. Higher resolutions have issues on these model PC’s.

I have yet to try this card in a Dell Vostro 200 just to see as I have a x16 MSI ATI Radeon HD6450 1GB DDR in there.

3 monitors at once??, April 11, 2011

I have a new Windows XP SP3 small form factor desktop (Lenovo 7483) and wanted to use 3 monitors and wanted the card to have some oomph and DirectX 11 didn’t hurt, so I chose this half height card. It is designed to run 3 monitors at the same time (see comments).

I already had this adaptor, which I thought would work: Accell UltraAV B101B-003B Display Port with VGA Active Adapter, but it does not. Tho it worked with my ATI 5870 card on my Windows 7 machine at home and the description on both Amazon and AMD’s support website (see comments) say “Active”.

The adaptor does work if I only want to see two monitors. The first two ports used on this card are the only two I can see.

As a two monitor card, this HIS 5450 works quite well and is speedy enough for my needs at work (no games), but if you are expecting 3 monitors to be driven, hopefully you either have a monitor with a DisplayPort input or are willing to spend $100 on an Accell “Active Adaptor”.

It only takes up one slot and if your open slot is to the right of this PCI-e slot, the the ribbon going to the VGA plug will be quite tight, but it does fit.

It works in either the very short PCIe 1x slot or the longer PCI Express x16 slot.
